Velodrom
Modern event venue for sports, music, and entertainment in Berlin
The Velodrom Berlin is one of the capital’s most distinctive event venues. With space for up to 12,000 visitors, the arena offers ideal conditions for sporting events, concerts, shows, and business events. Located directly inside the Velodrom, the UFO—a flexible event space for up to 5,000 guests—perfectly complements the large arena. Modern infrastructure, versatile layout options, and professional venue management make the Velodrom a premier destination for unforgettable live experiences in Berlin.
History
The Velodrome was planned as part of Berlin’s bid for the 2000 Olympic Games, along with the Max-Schmeling-Halle and the swimming and diving facilities at Europapark. After the International Olympic Committee selected Sydney as the host city, the construction plans were expanded to include multifunctionality even during the construction phase, so that the arena could be used as a modern multipurpose venue.
The grand opening took place on January 23, 1997, with the 86th Berlin Six-Day Race. The official completion and handover to the Berlin Senate took place in September 1997. Today, with a capacity of approximately 12,000 guests, the arena offers flexible options for standing-room-only concerts, seated shows, sports and esports events, TV productions, and business events.
Unique Location
The Velodrom is characterized by its circular shape and its largely underground construction, which allows it to blend harmoniously into its surroundings. Inside, an impressive self-supporting steel roof structure defines the space: the circular “spoked wheel,” with a diameter of 142 meters, is considered the largest structure of its kind in Europe and can support loads of up to 50 metric tons, with individual joints capable of bearing up to one metric ton.
The site also includes the UFO, a multifunctional event space for up to 5,000 visitors. The flexible layout is suitable for smaller concerts, club shows, galas, conferences, or other event formats, expanding the arena’s range of uses.
Operation
The Velodrom and UFO are operated by Velomax Berlin Hallenbetriebs GmbH. An experienced team handles technology, security, logistics, food service, and visitor services, ensuring that events of any size can be carried out efficiently. Sustainability is a central guiding principle: certified environmental and energy management, ongoing operational optimizations, and excellent public transportation access all support responsible event operations.
Today, the Velodrom is synonymous with international live events, major sporting highlights, and concert productions of the highest caliber. With modern infrastructure, flexible space concepts, and professional venue management, the Velodrom is one of Berlin’s premier event venues and a place for unforgettable live experiences.
